Chickpea
25% from this sale will benefit Adventure 4 Change, a hub of neighbours engaging upstream to prevail against the odds of displacement, poverty and underemployment.
Think back to your first job: how scary and/or challenging and/or rewarding it felt to get hired and work for money and build respect and confidence. How did you get that job – was it through a parent’s advocacy? Maybe a connected resume-dropper?
Now imagine how difficult it can be for a newcomer youth to get their job application accepted.
Marcus has a passion to afford youth this opportunity. He started Genesis at Adventure 4 Change as a chance for teens to interview for a variety of jobs with partner employers, work for the summer, and potentially stay on through the school year and beyond. Numbers have been rising since inception in 2018; the goal for 2020 is to have 15 youth involved in the program.
I want to dedicate “Chickpea” to Marcus and his band of freshly-employed youth, so that I can think of them whenever I pack hummus in my lunch.
"Chickpea" is on exhibition at Seven Shores Community Cafe in Waterloo, partially co-owned by my dear, longtime friends, Steve and Deb Tulloch. They helped form my idea of what it means to love.
We're gonna throw a party! Stop by at the cafe from September 18 to October 26 to wander the WorldRooted gallery and enjoy a delicious treat. Then, make sure to pop by on Saturday, October 26 from 6:00-9:00pm for our open house! The counter will be open, there'll be live music, and WorldRooted swag will be available to purchase. We're all excited to say hi!
